Hi friend!! You can totally cope with weight gain using my 3 favorite body positivity tips. I know that weight gain can be an incredibly difficult time in your life – but you CAN do it because it WILL help you heal your relationship with food 🙂 (Trust me, I’ve totally been there!)
WHAT IS BODY POSITIVITY?
Bree!!! You already talked about this. (Yup, I did here.) But who doesn’t want MORE tips for loving their body?! I mean really… we can all use a bit more help with self-love because it’s just that important to finding Food Freedom.
The great thing is that there are so many amazing body positive women spreading the love that all sizes, shapes, and body types are beautiful. (@ownitbabe on Instagram is my favorite source of inspiration for this!) Because it’s TRUE! All sizes, shapes, and body types are beautiful.
But I still struggle with my body image sometimes.
I can see these women and know that they are beautiful… but then at the same time I can look at myself and feel so terrible about my own body. This disconnect is awful and leaves me feeling like I’m stuck, sabotaging myself, in this mode of self-criticism. It doesn’t even make any sense!!! But I still feel it.
YOU CAN PRACTICE SELF-LOVE IN NEW WAYS
I so desperately wanted to love my body, but it was SO hard to actually do! So, I had to start doing something differently to love my body. I had to take a different plan of action that allowed me to LOVE my body instead of constantly HATE on it.
Because let’s face it… if you’re going through weight gain, how can you not struggle with body image in some way?
I want to make that clear, right now. Because honestly, most of us do struggle!!! Even the people who believe in body positivity struggle at times. We can get past those feelings if we want to! It just takes a few tips and tricks to put your body image in YOUR favor.
WEIGHT GAIN AFTER WEIGHT LOSS (AND AN ED) IS CHALLENGING
I talked about my process of gaining weight after losing weight with disordered eating in this post. (There’s even a video!) But the idea is that I did figure out how to love my body. And sure, I still struggle at times, but I feel SO much better than I ever did when I was in the middle of my struggle with orthorexia. The thing is, I gained weight after orthorexia… I did. I had to because I had to STOP doing what I was doing. It wasn’t sustainable, it wasn’t healthy, and it definitely wasn’t making me happy either.
So I ate more… and I gained weight… and I GOT BETTER. 🙂
But I definitely cried my way through the process because I hated it. I hated that my body that I worked so hard for wasn’t the answer to all my problems… in many ways it WAS my problem! (And that is extremely hard to come to grips with.) But I did it and it’s the best choice I EVER made!
3 BODY POSITIVE WAYS TO COPE WITH WEIGHT GAIN
So, to help you with the weight gain process, and help keep you on the path of doing what’s best for your body and mind so you can find Food Freedom like I did… Here are my 3 favorite tips I used to get comfy in my body:
1. DON’T STAND IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR FOR FOREVER.
Stop standing in front of the mirror so much 😉 Put away your full-length mirror if you have to! SERIOUSLY. I used to wake up every morning and check for my abs, but they weren’t there anymore… so, I’d stand in front of it criticizing myself. It was not productive at all to say the least. So just get rid of the “standing in front of the mirror time” and do something else. Your body IS changing, but you don’t have to watch it in a torturous way like watching paint dry!!
2. STOP TAKING SO MANY SELFIES.
Stop taking so many selfies (FOR REALZ). We’re all guilty of it. I know from my personal experience that I would always want to capture “my cute outfit” and then I could NEVER get a good angle of myself on camera… so I would bend and twist and move my body ridiculously just to look “better” than my actual reflection. Yup, I turned a selfie into a big pile of self-destructive criticism. So, I stopped taking selfies! Instead, I acknowledge my cute outfit in the mirror, give myself a cheesy snap and point fingers at reflection you look good 😉 and then I WALK AWAY from the mirror! It’s so incredibly simple that it works!!
3. DITCH CLOTHES THAT DON’T FIT.
Keep clothes that make you feel good about your body, then ditch the rest! The worst thing for your body image? Putting on clothes that make you feel super yucky about yourself, only to take them off and try on something ELSE that ALSO makes you feel bad about your body. Yeah, let’s avoid that whole mess and only keep clothes in your closet that make you feel the MOST comfortable in your own skin!
TAKEAWAY: HELP YOURSELF BE BODY POSITIVE
You 100% can be MORE body positive and learn how to love and accept your body, even when it’s difficult (because it is). But you CAN DO IT.
