How do you stop cravings and find balance? That might be a trick question 😉, but there are 5 super simple steps you can use to find food freedom.
CAN YOU STOP CRAVINGS? AND IS BALANCE EVEN A REAL THING?
Woke up looking like a 🐿 because my face is swollen AF 😂 Also, how much ice cream is too much ice cream? (Totally asking for me, not a friend 😜) After getting my wisdom teeth out yesterday, I wrote in my Instagram stories that I could live off of dairy (DEF my favorite food) aka cheese 🧀, ice cream 🍦, and yogurt. And then I asked you guys YOUR favorite foods and how you find this magical thing called ✨balance✨.
SORRY, TRICK QUESTION 😉
In some way, asking you guys what you did to find balance in order to stop cravings was totally a trick question. Why? Because balance is VERY vague 😬 It means different things to everyone, especially in the dieting and ED recovery communities. But even with that said, I got some GREAT answers from you guys and I’m going to give some tips based on what you wrote, PLUS my combined personal and coaching experiences too.
And a whopping 89% of you ARE CURRENTLY STRUGGLING WITH BALANCE (according to my poll) so clearly, we need to chat about this 😅 And to be perfectly openly honest, I still struggle with balance sometimes 🤷♀️ ‘tis life (perfection is NOT the goal). Which brings me to…
5 STEPS TO STOP CRAVINGS AND FIND BALANCE
1️⃣ LISTEN TO YOUR CRAVINGS
This was my favorite response from you guys. But I’m going to dive deeper 👉🏼 When you stop looking at cravings as something you need to FIX (I’m 👀 at you diet culture) then we can get to the real stuff 👏🏼 WHY are you having cravings and HOW are you dealing with them?
2️⃣ IT’S OKAY TO FEEL LOST
Don’t be upset when you don’t know what to do. IT’S HARD TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY (so we can all take a sigh of relief right now for being human😅😂) You’re going to make “mistakes” and I still do all the time.
3️⃣ LEARN FROM YOUR “MISTAKES”
Don’t punish yourself for them. And for me. this really falls in line with ✨binge eating. When I wouldn’t allow myself to have the bacon cheeseburger on the bun instead of the bare burger on a salad 🥗😑 👉🏼 99% of the time I wasn’t fulfilled (duh, Bree) so I would roam the kitchen cabinets and pantry and fridge and freezer until I found something that did. I’d eat all the things I didn’t even want and feel terribly guilty and miserable for my “lack of control” and not even know why I was DOING it anymore. All because I didn’t eat the burger I really wanted. Now I eat the burger 🙌🏼🍔 lesson learned 😌Read more about how I stopped binge eating here.
4️⃣ UNDERSTAND THE “WHY” BEHIND YOUR CRAVINGS
Seriously, why are you having cravings? 🤔 And I don’t want a specific answer. I want you to question WHY you have the cravings as they happen 👉🏼 it helps you understand your physical, mental, and emotional cravings (they’re different things!!) + how they all work together.
5️⃣ HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH YOUR CRAVINGS?
Now that you know cravings are different in every situation, what are you going to do about them? And this is HIGHLY PERSONAL ❤️ And trust me, there are no perfect answers. Just growth and learning. If you want some help walking through steps like this, you can grab these free resources.
HOW I PUT IT ALL TOGETHER👇🏼
If I have an ✨emotional craving✨ for ice cream I’m probably eating the ice cream to avoid binge eating it later. AND I’m also doing other things to comfort myself from whatever emotions are bringing this up.
If I’m having a ✨physical craving✨ for ice cream I might ask myself, am I eating enough food, enough variety of food, and yummy things that satisfy me? Then if I’m stuck on the craving I’ll eat ice cream.
And if I’m having a ✨mental craving✨ for ice cream I’m usually super duper stressed about something. If I don’t eat the ice cream I’ll obsess about in my head until I eat it, so I just eat it and put myself out of my misery 😉🤗
TAKEAWAY: YOU HAVE MORE POWER THAN YOU THINK YOU DO
