What does it mean to be healthy? Well, it depends on who you ask! We all have our definition of what being healthy really means. There’s no doubt that food plays one of the biggest roles in our health, but being healthy means a lot more than just the sum of the vitamins, minerals, carbs, fat, and protein.
Being healthy also depends on…
- How well you sleep at night.
- Your ability to manage stress.
- Your overall outlook and mindset on life.
- Your relationship with food.
- Any existing medical conditions or chronic inflammation.
- The quality of your relationships and social life.
- How much you move your body (too much or too little).
- The health of your environment with toxins, pollutions, mold, etc.
- And anything else that affects YOU!

The funny thing is, focusing all of my attention on food didn’t make me healthy. It actually made me pretty darn miserable! But the amazing news is that you can absolutely turn a strict nutrition-focused approach to health into something that makes you happy and healthy.
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT NUTRITION
I quickly learned that I needed to evaluate my focus on nutrition. Everything I was doing in my life was because of food in some way. Looking back, I can’t believe how much time I spent…
- Counting calories and tracking my macros.
- Avoiding carbs on my low carb diet.
- Feeling guilty for indulging in any type of sugar.
- Restricting my food choices and creating “food rules” in my head.
- Hating on my body for needing more food than I “should” eat on a low-calorie diet.
Focusing that much on nutrition was absolute madness! Thank goodness I stopped being stressed and obsessed over my food a loooooong time ago. In fact, all of this time and attention I spent on my diet didn’t leave me in good health. Instead, I ended up on the verge of a major eating disorder.
It wasn’t until then that I realized that I needed MORE than just food to be healthy. I needed to be happy!

3 WAYS BEING HEALTHY IS MORE THAN JUST NUTRITION
So how can you make sure you’re being healthy in all areas of your life, and not just nutrition? Simple! You do these 3 life-changing things 🙂
1. PRACTICE AMAZING SELF CARE
My focus on nutrition quickly turned into a healthy eating obsession. I thought that focusing all of my attention on my diet would make me healthy and happy, but it turns out I was wrong! Being healthy really means practicing self-care in all aspects of your life. Taking care of your whole self (from your body to your mind) is essential to living a healthy life that also makes you happy.

- Job before my need to go to sleep at a decent hour.
- Friends before my need to have some quiet time to relax and unwind.
- Social media accounts before my need to stop comparing myself to others and improve my mindset.
- And on and on and on…
The point is, we’re all guilty of putting people, money, things, etc. before ourselves. It’s not wrong, but it’s just not sustainable or healthy for us in the long run. You simply can’t help others if you aren’t in a really strong, prepared place to take on the extra stress. Because let’s face it! Helping others is an added stress on our lives whether we enjoy it or not 🙂 You’re an amazing person, and you deserve to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
While it may be difficult to prioritize self-care at first, it can actually allow you to be of better service to yourself and to the people you are trying to help… and it all starts by making the time to do things for you!
2. EMPOWER YOUR POSITIVE MINDSET
Living a healthy lifestyle is more than just a physical change… it’s a mindset change! The best part is, what’s good for your mind is also good for your body. Why? S T R E S S. Chronic stress has a negative effect on your mind and on your body, so avoiding it gives you the upper hand on finding physical health and mental happiness. I was always guilty of putting my workouts and nutrition (the physical stuff) before relaxing and having fun. But now, I know it’s not worth the sacrifice! I’m actually healthier when I remember to take care of my emotional, spiritual, and mental needs too. Trust me, I never thought making time to create a positive mindset would be so rewarding!
3. SHARE YOUR HAPPINESS WITH OTHERS
One of my favorite parts of being healthy is watching the positive impact it has on the people I love. Just like you’re a product of everything and everyone you’re surrounded by, they’re a product of you too! So, if you make a positive change that makes a difference in your life, it will impact the people closest to you too. Now that’s cool!
I’ve seen this happen like a ripple effect. I changed myself, then my mom changed, then my dad changed. My boyfriend changed, then his family changed. Now my friends are even changing! We’re all taking steps towards taking care of our bodies and our minds… all because I was interested in being healthy! Adopting the idea that health is more than just nutrition has changed my health and my happiness.
