Does mindful eating work?
The short answer: Heck yes…
But you have to do these 3 things 😉
DOES MINDFUL EATING WORK?
Mindfulness, intuitive eating, wellness, balance, clean eating, “listen to your body”… We’ve totally heard it all before! But the problem is, it never feels like mindful eating works. While I’m actually a huge fan of mindfulness, I know it can feel like a broken record at times.
It’s not always easy to tune into “what your body’s telling you”. I mean really, what does that actually mean?
And sometimes your body is telling you to eat ALL the cookies, then what are you supposed to do?! How many times can we hear about mindfulness over and over again before we figure out how to make mindful eating work in real life?Mindful eating sounds good in theory, but now it’s time to make it work for YOU.
HOW DO YOU MAKE MINDFUL EATING WORK FOR YOU?
I get it, we’re all different. What works for me, what works for you, what works for everyone else is all going to be different… But what else is new?! 😉 We live different lives, have different interests, like different foods, and have unique eating habits. When was the last time you met someone who lived the exact same life as you? Yeah, NEVER 😉
If you want to get results and heal your relationship with food and YOURSELF, you have to customize everything to fit YOUR life 🙂
The key is, you have to respect your whole body AND do things that also make you happy if you want mindful eating habits to work for you.
- Do things that you enjoy! Cook, dance, call your best friends, explore new museums – do more of what YOU like to do.
- Find ways to get ahead of those stressful situations that you know are coming. Stress HAPPENS – so the better you know how to deal with it, the happier you’ll be 🙂
- Stop making yourself fit into a box with specific rules – especially around food. You’re HUMAN and your needs change all the time.
The key to making mindful eating work for you? Live a mindful LIFE.
When you learn how to live a mindful life, and put everything about being healthy in your belief system, then you learn how to make mindfulness actually work for YOU.
3 WAYS TO MAKE MINDFUL EATING WORK FOR YOU
1. STOP THINKING MINDFUL EATING IS THE SAME THING AS NUTRITION
Perhaps one of the MOST important parts of mindful eating is realizing that it’s not the same thing as practicing great nutrition. Nutrition is a science of the food in your life, while mindfulness is a belief system that gives and flows with your life. You don’t have to be a walking health guru or nutrition encyclopedia to practice mindful eating… And actually, if you’re striving to be a “perfectly healthy eater” you’re probably missing the whole point of mindfulness.
Trust me, I made this mistake too. I’ve focused all of my energy on my nutrition before… and I didn’t like what happened.
2. REALIZE YOUR LIFE IS ABOUT WAY MORE THAN FOOD
If you want to be healthy, stop thinking that it’s all about food. You can’t focus ONLY on nutrition and expect that everything in your life will fall into place. Forget the mainstream ideas about being healthy. It’s not about:
The thing is, I’m sick of one, narrowly-focused solution being the be-all end-all cure to being healthy…. it’s just not sustainable. You can’t expect that on its own mindfulness or nutrition will.
- Allow you to love your body
- Help you maintain a healthy weight
- Make you physically stronger
- Or do whatever you’re working on changing in your life…
Nothing happens unless you actually put the entire idea of being healthy into your belief system and take real ACTION to make changes that allow mindfulness to work.

3. PRACTICE AMAZING SELF-CARE
Your body isn’t only taking in what you feed it… It NEEDS sleep, exercise, and relaxation to function at its best. Remember how hard it was to listen to your body when it said: “don’t eat that third slice of pizza” when you were exhausted from the 4.5 hours of sleep you got the night before?
Yeah…. that’s because mindfulness doesn’t happen when your mind is clouded with stress, exhaustion, or any kind of unhappiness for that matter.
That’s why it’s essential that you practice amazing self-care!
- Get good sleep
- Manage your stress
- Move your body
- Have more fun
- Fuel your body
So what can you do to start working on your sleep, stress, exercise, happiness, and nutrition?
So many things!! But the key isn’t taking on a TON of things all at once. It’s much better to do one thing amazingly that really helps you, than to half-a** a bunch of things that only add to your stress in the long run. Personally, I love listening to podcasts while I walk my dog, going on a weekly sushi date with my boyfriend, and having some quiet time to journal in the mornings with my cup of coffee before work.
Trust me, once you put your entire body’s needs on top priority, you’ll be able to focus on making mindful eating work for YOU.
