WHAT IS RESTRICTION?
Restriction = not allowing yourself to do something you want.
With orthorexia and binge eating, I struggled with restriction a TON. I restricted my food choices by following a paleo diet, going low carb, and practicing intermittent fasting incorrectly. But it’s not just food! When you’re battling restrictive dieting and eating disorders, you’re also typically struggling with restriction in many other different areas of your life. For example, I also restricted myself with fitness by falling into a pattern of exercise addiction.

So really, if restriction goes way beyond food, how exactly are we restricting ourselves? Well, we restrict our…
- Free time by following intense workout schedules.
- Social life by creating rigid routines to keep us “healthy”.
- Happiness by trying to control every second of our life.
- Individuality by comparing ourselves to others.
- Dreams by taking away the self-love we deserve to feel.
And of course, there are many more ways you can restrict yourself from doing what you want… but these are easy to identify if you’ve been struggling with disordered eating habits or chronic dieting.
HOW DO YOU BREAK FREE FROM RESTRICTION?
If you’ve tried breaking free from restriction with food and it hasn’t worked, then you need to break free from restriction in OTHER areas of your life.
Think about it… If we restrict everything (our free time, our social life, our thoughts) it’s going to be INCREDIBLY difficult to break free from restricting our food.
From that point of view, if we break free ONLY from food restriction it’s going to feel like the CRAZIEST and SCARIEST thing we’ve ever done (because we’re not used to it!!) Which is exactly why we have to PROVE it to ourselves that we can BREAK RESTRICTION by stopping the restriction around MORE than just food️.
Basically, we need to replace restriction with Food Freedom!
